How To Help Your Husband With His Anxiety


If your husband is under a lot of stress you may also notice that he has a lot of anxiety as well. This is because anxiety is the reaction to stress. This can then put a lot of emotional weight on him as well as your entire marriage. Things like unemployment, family problems and financial problems can all cause anxiety. However, even with the anxiety present, you can still help support your husband in times like this.

You should first and foremost try to figure out what the causes are as well as what the side effect are of the anxiety that he is exhibiting. This way you are going to be a lot more empathetic as well as understanding on your part. Below is a list of some physical signs of anxiety:

  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Sexual issues

Some of these symptoms can also be caused by things like caffeine, diet pills, thyroid medications as well as alcohol.

You also need to know that a lot of people who are suffering from anxiety will have panic attacks and this can lead your husband not to be able to communicate especially in any kind of social situations. You need to do research on panic attacks so that you will know how to help him better when he has one. The classic signs are problems with breathing and feelings of uncontrollable and unexplainable panic. Make sure that you not what might have been happening right about when the attack started so that you can give this information to his doctor.

Unfortunately no amount of medication is going to take care of or cure anxiety. It may be able to help control it a little bit but if this does not go away on it's own, there may be no other recourse but for your husband to get some psychotherapy. This kind of treatment will include talk therapy and he will work with a cognitive behavior therapist who will help him set goals, talk about issues and help him to change the way he reacts to stress.

You will need to talk to your husband and let him know of your concerns and try to convince him to go see a therapist or a counselor. If not that, there are support groups that will support people with depression and anxiety. This might be a way for him to be able to find out a way to fight his anxiety.

As his wife the best thing you can do around the home is to try and create the most relaxing environment that you can. Play some soothing music when he gets home or have one of his favorite movies ready for him to watch. Make sure that you both eat healthy nutritious foods. Make sure he gets enough sleep as well. If you have to buy him some ear plugs so he can block out the noise when trying to go to sleep. Include plans to go for walks, hiking in the park, swimming whatever you can think of that will take him outdoors and get a little exercise at the same time. Find something new to do together that will help bring you both closer together and will help lower the stress levels in his life.
